Baggage

Carry-on

You are allowed to bring one carry-on backpack and one small personal item, like a purse on the plane with you..

Please do not bring a backpack and a small roller suitcase on the plane - we may not be able to store that much luggage.

Liquids

You can bring liquids, however, they have to be in containers that are 3.4 oz or less and all liquids need to be placed in clear bag for going through security.

Padlocks

Bring small padlocks for you to lock your carry-on luggage while on the plane, at the airport and when taking public transportation.

2 Check-in Suitcases

Each check-in suitcase has a max weight of 50lbs (23kg). You will bring one suitcase or backpack for your personal items, and please reserve your 2nd check in suitcase to be filled with donation items.  You can donate your second suitcase in Africa or bring it home.

Organization

Packing Cubes

Students will be living in dorm style accommodations in both Kahama and Zanzibar.  Using packing cubes is a great way to keep the shared space and your things organized. You can purchase these online, or REI or even at a  place like Marshalls.

What are you bringing?

It's very tempting to overpack especially on a month long trip.  However, I would like to encourage you to only bring what will easily fit into your one suitcase.  Go over the packing list and make sure you have all of your essentials and then you can add to your case from there.

Passport Wallet

Your passport is the most important item you will have on the trip. I recommend a passport protector type of wallet.

I would also recommend a small bag that can be padlocked to store your passport, cash and other important docs in it while you are not using them.

Lost Luggage

What to do?

It is not unheard of for an airline to misplace your luggage. I have put together a list of protocols to help.

1. Before checking your luggage in at the airport, please take a picture of your suitcases and their luggage tags.

2. Send the pictures to your parents right away.

3. If you have padlocks on your suitcases, it can minimize the risk of any items being stolen.

4. It can take several days or weeks to track down missing luggage, so pack a change of clothes in your carry-on luggage and all essential medications and other things

5. Parents, we will need your assistance in tracking down luggage. It is very time-consuming and we need to be able to focus on our projects and student activities.
